The Celts Ride Out?

Chariots are lovely to look at : their impact on the tabletop battlefield rarely lives up to their appearance, though that is probably in line with reality.  Hitherto only my Achaemenid Persian armies have had any in their line up but some time ago I must have bought a couple of packs of Newline Design's lovely figures.  When these came to light during a sorting out of cavalry prior to rebasing them I decided it was high time to get the chariots painted and ready for combat.

A key decision was to add copper wire reins to the kit, partly for aesthetic reasons, partly to give greater stability to the charioteer figures who do not have lugs to fix them into the chariot floor and cannot be surreptitiously glued to the side frame for added stability like the warrior figures.  The drilling out of holes for the wires was easy and with a little patience each set of reins was put in place while the charioteers were supported with lumps of blu-tac.

Undercoating and leather paint finished off that aspect, after which the warrior figures could be added.

The first pack of four had two different charioteer figures while all the warriors were different.

The second batch repeated the warrior figures but contained two new styles of charioteer along with one of each in the original pack, allowing for an interesting mix of poses across the chariots, rather than just relying on the paint scheme to differentiate them.

Putting all eight bases together makes a stirring sight.  All I need to do now is work out how to use them.  Since these pictures were taken in early January they have been sitting in a drawer without seeing action which is not a happy situation for them to be in.

  1. Splendid chariot work, Kim! Hopefully, this lovely force is one to be reckoned with.
