Swabian Grenadiers

A few weeks in England are providing me with opportunity to make some progress with armies for campaigning on the imaginary continent of Antea.  These armies are of the Horse and Musket era and, as with my ancient armies, are a mix of 20mm plastic and lead figures.

The continent of Antea is divided into four major powers surrounding a central block of five minor states.  To the west lies the Kingdom of Galicia.  In recent years Galicia has absorbed several minor states along its eastern border and is now seen as a major threat to the security of the other leading powers.  Of these, the most vulnerable are the Imperial lands of Swabia, rich farming regions extending across the north of the continent, crossed by many rivers.  The elderly emperor has been trying to reform his armies to face the threat from Galicia but neither the Imperial cities nor the senior nobility are eager to pay higher taxes to support an increased military establishment.  Apart from a small Imperial Guard, the Emperor depends on troops provided by the Imperial circles of Lower Swabia and Eastern Swabia.  Each contributes three divisions of infantry and an assortment of light infantry and cavalry brigades, but each circle has different methods of recruitment and organisation.  Infantry battalions vary in size and the number of battalions in a Regiment can vary too.

What I am working on now are a couple of brigades of Grenadiers for divisions from the Eastern Circle.  One of these has two Regiments, each of two 800 man battalions. The other Brigade will have three Regiments each of two 600 man battalions.  The figures are Newline Designs Pavlov Grenadiers from their Russian range.  These have splendid Mitre hats, reflecting the older fashion of the Swabian army.  They will replace some Airfix British Grenadier figures that I converted many years ago by trimming down their bearskins to create Mitre hats.  These old figures will be relegated to duties as militia units.

Cleaning up the figures for the second Brigade.  This will have three Regiments each made up of two 600 man battalions.

A flag is still required for the 9th Grenadier Regiment - two 800 man battalions.

The 10th Grenadiers also need a flag and there is a command group for the brigade to be done as well.
